The report from MSHFN reel reporter Bill Bradford is that
Kentucky and Barkley Lakes elevation is 354 and the surface
temperature is in the upper 30s. After surviving a cold
February, we should experience some warmer temperatures. Bass
fishing has been real slow, but March usually has more warm
days, and the fishing should improve. Smallmouth bass will be
getting ready to spawn in April, and will begin biting better.
Largemouth bass will move to more shallow waters as the sun
warms this area first. Slow-rolling a spinnerbait, using a jig
n' pig, or maybe a small grub or craw, may be best to fish
early. As March continues to warm the water, the smallmouth will
begin to move up on gravel points, and should hit jigs and
tubes. Crappie fishing has been fair during the cold months. You
should be able to catch them on jigs and minnows fished around
cover at creek mouths or on the main lake in the 10- to 15-foot
range. Brush piles near the breaks may be the best bet for
catching more crappie. There is not much to report on catfishing
or bluegill fishing. Fishing in general should pick up as the
temperature begins to rise. Meanwhile, hang in there and give it
a try as soon as the days grow warmer.
