Wheeler Lake
Decatur Bait and Tackle (256-353-6491) is the spot to find all of the newest
and hottest lures for all types of freshwater game fish. They told us the
fishing has been pretty slow due to the heat. They have daytime temperatures
in the upper 90s with a heat index of 110 degrees. This is nothing new to
you the reader here in the Mid-South. The crappie fishing is slow and should
pick back up in September along with bass and striper fishing. The one
mainstay right now is the catfish. Catfish, particularly big blues and
channel cats, can be caught all over the river from one dam to the next from
creek to creek. Big shad are the key. Dead or alive the big cats love them.
Fish below the dam in the tail water, in the eddies, off the chunk rocks or
along the deep water channels. Bass fishing should produce with cranks,
spinnerbaits, soft plastics such as big Zoom worms, or even Spooks early in
the morning hours. The mouths of creeks and main lake points are good places
to start fishing. Slow trolling minnows or crankbaits should land a few
crappie when pulled over deep brush piles. Bream fishing will be a little
different when these temperatures push fish from the banks. Look for any
shade around 3-5 feet of water from over hanging trees, boat docks, etc.
Fish red worms or crickets under a small cork directly in that shade. The
best spots will have grass in them or close by. Stripers will hit big live
shad or spooks early in the morning hours in the boils or eddies under the
dam or off the chunk rocks. August fishing will be much of the same as July
methods. If its too hot for you, use this time in the A/C to clean up and
repair your gear, stock your tackle boxes and clean up your boat for
September fishing.
